Sappho
Alright, so I have finally picked an emminent person. As some of you know, I hadn’t picked until just today, sometime during school. Actually I had someone in mind, but this was of course before Mr. J told me IÂ should
pick a female. So I understand why he wanted us to pick females, so that we could see someone in power or that we could admire that we could relate to. So I decided to take it one step further. So I ended up picking Sappho (born between 630 and 612 BC and died around 570 BC). She was an ancient Greek poet, from the island of Lesbos. In fact the word ‘lesbian’ is derived from Sappho’s homeland. A lot of her poetry is about love, and passionate love affairs with both genders. Although there is only one complete surviving poem of hers, ‘Hymn to Aphrodite’, (there are plenty of other partial poems as well) she was a wonderful poet and is still greatly admired after all this time. She has left a legacy. Here’s a link to a website with most of her works.

Sappho seams like a very interesting lady. Since there isn’t much information on her life specifically, you’ll have to focus more on her poetry and impact than on her life. Maybe you could research how views on homesexuality then versus now? Good luck with your project!

Although you may not find a lot of information about her life, you can right your speech with a more historical fictional perspective. Mr. Jackson had told us before that sometimes if you create something that is real to your person, it will be real for the audience.

She sounds like a very interesting person, what about her inspires you or do you find easy to relate to? Don’t worry about the speech, as long as you’re proud of what you’ve done, it’ll be amazing.
